Objectives:

The project aims at protecting the population, buildings, shops and infrastructure in Al Sabeen and Shoob areas in Sana’a city from potential damages caused by heavy floods. This will contribute to improving the conditions of the citizens and lands adjacent to the Wadi, as well as enhancing the city planning and landscape. The project also aims at collecting flood water for different purposes, such as irrigation and groundwater recharge.

Description:

The project will contribute to the protection of the population, buildings and infrastructure from heavy flood damages in different parts of the capital Sana’a, by the construction of the required civil works. The project, which is expected to be completed during 2014, comprises the following main components:

  1. Execution of Civil Works: This includes the following:
    1. Completion of Part of Al Sayila Main Channel: This includes construction of open stone channels for water drainage with a length of about 3300 m and a width of about 24 m. Works also include the construction of about 8 pedestrian bridges and other landscaping works (sidewalks, afforestation, lighting, traffic signs and signals), in addition to all other necessary civil works.
    2. Channels and Pipelines in Hadda Area: This includes the construction of a group of concrete channels with a length of about 5 km and a group of stone channels with a length of about 4 km, in addition to other landscaping works (sidewalks and roads). It also includes the rehabilitation of affected infrastructure (drinking water networks, wastewater networks, electric and communication cables), and all civil works needed.
  2. Technical Services:This includes preparing studies, designs, tender documents, analyzing contractors’ bids, supervising project execution and follow up during maintenance period.
  3. Institutional Support and Training: This includes supporting Al Sayila Project Unit, by equipping it with the necessary computers and software, and machinery and equipment needed for the operation and maintenance of the utilities, in addition to conducting a training program for the unit’s staff.

Financing:

The Arab Fund’s loan covers about 81.0% of the total project cost. The Yemeni Government will cover the remaining cost of the project and any additional cost that may arise.
