Objectives:

The project aims at developing and improving air transport services in the Republic of Sudan, and meeting the increasing demand for air traffic, through the construction of a new international airport in Khartoum, which will contribute to the economic and social development of the country.

Description:

The project, which is expected to be completed at the end of 2014, consists of the construction of an airport infrastructure in accordance with the standards adopted by the International Civil Aviation Organization to be able to receive all types of aircraft. It includes the construction of a runway, taxiways, aprons, airport buildings, and the provision of all necessary equipment and devices for passenger services and cargo handling. It also includes the provision of technical and consultancy services for project implementation, and institutional support for the Project Implementation Unit of the Khartoum New International Airport. The main components of the project can be summarized as follows:

  1. Runway, Taxiways, Aprons and Service Roads: This includes the construction of a runway, 4 km long and 60 m wide, taxiways and aprons. It also includes all electrical works, water drainage and other services, and all complementary works such as service roads inside the airport and external parking for vehicles.
  2. Main Terminal: This includes the construction of a 30000 m2 terminal building, comprising departure and arrival halls for passenger and air cargo services, supply and installation of necessary equipment and devices, including luggage handling units, safety and security systems, and equipment required for the management and control of the operations of the terminal. This also includes the provision of space for various services such as commercial facilities.
  3. Equipment, Devices and Airport Services: This includes the supply and installation of all necessary equipment and devices for the airport operations, and for the safety and security of land and air traffic, such as navigation and communications equipment, an air monitoring station, runway lighting and airplane fuelling systems. It also includes the construction of an air traffic control tower, a fire fighting station, maintenance workshops, a power generating station and an electricity network, drinking water and sewage networks, along with other complementary works.
  4. Land Acquisition and Preparatory Works: This consists of land acquisition and preparation of the site, and includes construction of a service road, and provision of power and water, for the implementation of the project. It also includes the construction of a camp for the project implementation unit.
  5. Institutional Support: This includes providing the project implementation unit with all necessary computers and software systems, and training of its employees, to enable it to develop its administrative, financial and technical capabilities.
  6. Technical and Consultancy Services: This includes preparation of studies, designs and tender documents, analyzing contractors’ bids, and supervision of the project.

Financing:

The Arab Fund’s loan covers about 20% of the total project cost. It is expected that Arab financial institutions will contribute to the financing of the project. The Sudanese Government will cover the remaining cost of the project and any additional cost that may arise.
