Objectives:

The project aims at satisfying the increasing demand for electric power and energy in the Republic of Sudan, by exploiting stored water in the Upper Atbara and Setit Dams complex’s reservoir to generate hydroelectric energy estimated at around 824 GW annually, from the installed power generation capacity of 320 MW.

Description:

The project, which is expected to be completed at the beginning of the third quarter of 2015, includes the supply and installation of a power generating station to be built on the right bank of the Upper Atbara river in the location of the Rumela Dam, in addition to technical services to prepare the project’s final design and supervision. The project consists of the following main components:

  1. Hydroelectric and Electric Works: This includes a 320 MW hydroelectric power plant consisting of 4 identical vertical Kaplan turbines, with a rated capacity of 80 MW each and a head of 40 m, a flow rate of 250 m3/s, and four generators. It also includes four power transformers and an auxiliary transformer, a 220 kV switchyard, control and protection systems, and other accessories, along with a double circuit 33 kV line to link the Burdana power plant to the Rumela power plant.
  2. Technical Services: This includes technical and consultancy services needed to review the generating station’s studies and design, to assist in bid evaluation, to supervise the project implementation, and to participate in factory acceptance tests and in commissioning.

Financing:

The Arab Fund’s loan covers about 62% of the total project cost. It is expected that other Arab financial institutions will contribute to the financing of the project. The Government of Sudan will cover the remaining cost of the project and any additional cost that may arise.
