Objectives:
The project aims at covering the expected shortage in water supply in the Tangier region, and satisfying its future needs until 2030. This will be accomplished by reinforcing water production facilities of the Tangier dams system, and the transfer of water to consumption areas. The project also aims at addressing the severe drinking water shortage in the Tantan region, in addition to covering future population needs for water until 2030, through the construction of a water desalination plant and transport of this water to consumption areas.
Description:
The project, which is expected to be completed before the end of 2011, consists of the construction of Tangier and Tantan water production facilities, as well as technical services required for the implementation of these works. The following is a description of the main project components:
- Tangier Water Facilities: This includes the following:
- Extension of Al Hashif Water Treatment Plant and Construction of Pumping Stations and Reservoirs: This includes expansion of Al Hashif water treatment plant in order to increase its production capacity from about 1.4 m3/s to about 2.8 m3/s, construction of a pumping station to pump 9th April dam water with a capacity of about 3.2 m3/s and a head of about 19 m, as well as construction of a treated water pumping station with a capacity of about 1.4 m3/s and a head of about 84 m. Works also include construction of a reservoir with a capacity of about 1000 m3, and another one with a capacity of about 500 m3, in addition to an integrated system for control and operation of facilities.
- Water Transport Lines: This includes laying of pipelines with a total length of 35 km, and diameters varying between 1000 and 1600 mm .
- Tantan Water Facilities:This includes the following:
- Water Desalination Plant: This includes equipping two existing wells to pump brackish water with a total capacity of about 140 l/s, laying of about 3 km of pipelines with a diameter of about 400 mm, construction of a desalination plant with reverse osmosis system with a capacity of about 100 l/s, and construction of a water pumping station with a capacity of about 100 l/s and a head of about 55 m. Works also include laying of electrical lines with a length of about 8 km, to transmit electricity to the wells, the desalination plant and the pumping station.
- Water Transport Plant: This includes laying of pipelines with a length of about 33 km and diameters varying between 300 and 400 mm, and construction of a water pumping station with a capacity of about 70 l/s and a head of about 170 m .
- Technical Services: This includes consultancy services needed to complete project related studies as well as supervision of project implementation.
Financing:
The Arab Fund’s loan covers about 73.0% of the total project cost. The Moroccan Government will cover the remaining cost of the project and any additional cost that may arise.
