Craftsmen Prepare Gypsum Layers for Handcarved Ceilings
Intricately handcarved gypsum covers the concrete structural ceilings in
many areas of the Arab Organizations Headquarters Building. The
process starts with craftsmen working fibers into the gypsum mixture (picture left
below). This mixture is then applied to molds and dried (picture right
below).
Once set, the gypsum is carved in traditional geometric
patterns (picture left below). The carved panels and forms are set on racks
where skilled craftsmen painstakingly finish the handcarving (picture right below).
Craftsman works inside a gypsum dome to add finishing touches (picture
left below). The finished panels are set over the concrete structural ceiling (picture
right below).
