Objectives:

By extracting and adequately distributing the Eastern Rimal basin, the project aims at providing access to drinking water for the inhabitants of 6 towns and villages and various populated areas in the regions of Al-Kamel, Al-Wafi, Jaalan Bani Bou-Hassan and Jaalan Bani Bou-Ali.

Description:

The project, which is expected to be completed by the first quarter of 2003, consists of the following components:

1- Wells, water distribution pipelines, reservoirs, pumping stations and control equipment: 

a. This includes the digging of 8 wells in the Al-Kamel field and 21 other wells in the Jaalan field, the equipping of these wells and the laying of approximately 16.5 kIn long pipelines with diameters ranging between 150 mm and 600 mm to collect water from both fields.

b. Supply and extension of a conveyance pipeline between the Al-Mowazana reservoir and the neighboring towns, villages and populated areas. The lines are expected to be 122 km long and have diameters ranging between lOO mm to 800 mm.

c. Construction of a pumping station in the Al-Kamel field with a capacity of 350 m3 per hour and another in the field of Jaalan with a capacity of 1,050 m3 per hour as well as the supply and installation of all necessary equipment that would enable the sterilization of water.

d. Construction of a reservoir in the Al-Kamel field, another in the Jaalan filed and 10 distribution reservoirs with a capacity ranging between 500 m3 to 12,000 m3 and 11 stations intended for water distribution in remote areas.

2- Water distribution networks: This includes the construction of water distribution networks in six towns and villages, approximately 295 kIn long, with a diameter ranging between 100 and 400 mm.

3- Consulting services: Such services include the provision of the necessary consulting services to review the project designs, analyze tender documents and to perform the required supervision on project implementation.

 4- Training and institutional support: This encompasses training technical staff involved in the operation and maintenance of the project, with particular emphasis on the advanced technologies developed for remote control. This would also contribute to supporting the Ministry's existing equipments.

5. Land appropriation: This includes appropriating the required land that would enable the digging of the wells as well as the extension of the required pipes and the construction of reservoirs and pumping stations.

Financing:

The Arab Fund loan covers about 33% of the total project costs. The Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development is also contributing to the financing of the project with a loan of about KD 9.5 million. The Islamic Development Bank will also contribute KD 8.0 million and the Omani Government will finance the remaining costs of the project and any contingencies that may arise during its execution.
