Objectives:

The project would increase the storage capacity of the existing Rossaires dam on the Blue Nile River in order to regulate the river floods, intensify existing irrigated agriculture over a surface of I.I million hectares and to irrigate an additional 190 thousand hectares. The project also aims at increasing the production of electricity by 440 GWH annually. The project is expected to boost agricultural production, alleviate the current deficit in energy production, improve the living standards of the population in the area, improve the trade balance of the country and increase employment opportunities in the irrigated areas.

Description:

The project, which is expected to be completed by mid-2006, consists of all the necessary works to raise the dam by 10 m and to increase the storage capacity from 3 to 7 billion m3 and consists of the following components:

1- Raising of the concrete section: The foundation of the concrete section was initially designed to accommodate the raising of the dam. This component includes the raising of the concrete section by 10 m, rehabilitation of the two currently-closed irrigation intakes and the installation of flow control gates.

2- Raising of the earthfill section: The crest of the existing earth dam will be excavated. The section will be raised by 10 m and the length will be increased from 4.0 km to 8.5 km in the right abutment, and from 8.5 km to 15.5 km in the left abutment. The new fill section height will vary from 4 m to 28 m, its crest width from 7 m to 10 m and the base width from 25 m to 210 m. The necessary works for the raising of the dam include preparatory, civil, electromechanical and hydromechanical works, engineering services for construction supervision and the resettlement of the inhabitants whose villages and farmlands will be flooded.
