Objectives:

The project aims at providing water for the inhabitants of approximately 46 towns and villages located in the areas of Abri, Dank and Yankal, by adequately exploiting the Messerrat basin.

Description:

The project, which is expected to be completed by the first quarter of the year 2002, consists of the following main components:

1- Water production works: This includes the digging of a well in the Bou Kerba field and eight other wells in the Wadi Al Ein field, and the provision of pumps and all necessary equipment for these wells, in order to operate the wells, in addition to laying pipelines to collect water from both fields. Pipes will also be required to enable the collection of water from both sites.

2- Main water supply pipes: This includes extending a conveyance line between the Bou Kerba valley and the Dank reservoir, from which a line would stem out to pump water into the Aflaj, Al-Maamour, Al-Mazem and Al-Subaikhi reservoirs, in addition to a line that would pump water from Al-Mowazaneh reservoir of the Wadi Al-Ein valley to the reservoirs of Tane'm, Abri, Dreiz, Khidil and Yankal. Another line would stem out there from, and would serve the reservoirs of Hayal and Maskan.

3- Construction of pumping and water purification stations: This includes the construction of seven water-pumping stations, and the supply of all equipment to enable adequate operation and remote control. This component also includes the supply of all necessary equipment for the sterilization of water .

4- Supply of electricity: This includes the construction of adequate power stations that would enable the operation of the wells as well as the pumping stations.

5- Construction of Reservoirs: This includes the construction of a reservoir in the valley of Wadi Al-Ein and another in the Bou Kerba valley, with the construction of approximately 15 distribution reservoirs.

6- Distribution networks: This includes the construction of distribution networks in 17 towns and villages in the regions of Abri, Dank and Yankal.

 7- Consulting services: This includes studies, engineering and consulting services required to execute and complete the project.

 

Financing:

The Arab Fund loan covers about 42% of the total project costs. The Islamic Development Bank is also expected to contribute to the financing of the project and will contribute a loan of about KD 9.6 million. The Omani Government will finance the remaining costs of the project and any contingencies that may arise during its execution.
