Objectives:
The project aims at connecting the AI-Hidd Production Facility to the governments 220kV electric grid in order to utilize the energy generated from the facility to meet the increasing demand for electricity and to eliminate the shortage projected to occur starting from the year 1999.
Description:
The project is expected to be completed by the middle of 1999 and represents the first phase of a program developed by the Bahraini government to provide additional electric energy to meet the current and future demands in Bahrain. The project consists of building the electric system needed to connect the output of the generating units located at AI-Hidd production facility to the national electric grid. All 274MW generated will be supplied to the grid. The main components of the project are:
Underground and Submarine Cables: Supply and installation of two 220kV, 300MVA cables. Each cable will be about 6.6km long, of which half is submerged and the other half underground. The project also includes the supply and installation of jointing materials, pilot cables, oil tanks, spare parts, maintenance tools and protection equipment. Both lines will start from AI-Hidd substation. One will terminate at Urn Al-Hassam substation, the other at the Embassies substation.
220kV Substation: Supply and installation of an indoor SF6 GIS substation consisting of the building, circuit breakers, reactors, bus bars, relay and control equipment, and provision for the addition of two future 220/66kV transformers.
Consulting Services: These include the preparation of detailed studies and technical specifications for all project components, the participation in all witness testing at manufacturers sites, and the supervision of the work up to final completion.
Institutional Support and Training: These include upgrading the Training and Development Center and providing it with equipment and computers, along with training for MEWs electrical staff on the use and maintenance of the equipment supplied in this project.
Financing:
The Arab Fund loan constitutes about 48% of the project cost. The Islamic Development Bank will contribute $29.5 million (about KD 8.99 million). The Bahraini government will finance the remainder of the project cost.
