Objectives:
The project aims at providing an integrated campus for the Lebanese University, and solving the Universitys current capacity shortage and potential demand for places.
Description:
The project is expected to be completed by the end of the year 2000 and consists of the construction of integrated university buildings in AI-Hadath and El-Fanar areas In Beirut and the Beqaa valley with a total capacity of about 34,000 students. Twelve faculties and two higher education institutes will be built, and public utilities and consulting services will be provided.
The project consists of the following components:
1 - Faculty and Higher Education Institute Buildings:
- Faculty of Law and Political Sciences.
- Faculty of Economics and Business Administration
- Faculty of Engineering.
- School of Pharmacy.
- Extension of the Faculty of Sciences.,
- Faculty of Medicine.
- Faculty of Public Health.
- Faculty of Education.
- Faculty of Sociology.
- Faculty of Agricultural Sciences.
- Faculty of Communications.
- Faculty of Literature and Humanities.
- National School of Fine Arts.
- National School of Public Administration.
These buildings contain auditoriums, lecture halls, libraries and laboratories, and their associated service rooms and facilities. Other buildings include a conference center, an Industrial Research Center, a restaurant, car park, kitchen, housing for administrative staff and dormitories (male and female).
2 - Public Utilities: These include:
Sports complex.
Technical area (thermal plant, power plant and maintenance block and laundry)
Railroad station University.
Main kitchen and parking area.
Water tanks and artesian well.
Utilities tunnel.
Other utility works, such as a pedestrian underpass, roads, equipment, decorative trees and University wall and gates.
3 - Consulting Services:
These include the necessary services to prepare detailed designs, make important changes and supervise project implementation.
Financing:
The Arab Fund loan represents about 26% of the total project cost. Co-financiers include the Islamic Development Bank with a loan equivalent to KD 5.9 million, the Saudi Arabian Government with a grant equivalent to KD 8.2 million, the Omani Government with a grant equivalent to KD 3.9 million. The Lebanese Government will finance the remainder of the project cost.
