Objectives:
The project aims at the regulation or the waters of Hima, Abeed, Rumail and Al-Bark Wadis to expand and intensify agriculture in the plains irrigated by these Wadis, in order to increase agricultural production, improve farmers incomes, improve the trade balance and self-sufficiency in various agricultural communities.
Description:
The project is expected to be completed by the end of the year 2000 and consists of four sub-projects comprising the building a darn on each or the four Wadis, expanding the irrigated area by 1,400 hectares and intensifying irrigation in about 3,500 hectares in the four areas.
The project includes the construction of a dam partly of roller competed concrete (RCC) and partly of earth fill. The dam will be l8m high, 480 m long and 4m wide at the crest with a base width of 105 m. The project also includes irrigation networks for about 800 hectares in Abu Arada plain including two pumping stations, a water tank, 63km of pipes. 60-l,000 mm in diameter and about 20 km of farm roads.
Wadi Hima Region in Ben Arous Province:
The project includes the construction of an earth fill dam about 24 m high and about 1184 m long with a width of 6 m at the crest and 160 m at the base. It also includes the construction of irrigation networks for about 700 hectares in the plain of Mornag. The installations will include 3 pumping stations, two water tanks, 50 km of pipes with diameters 60-800 mm, about 10 km of farm roads, and drip and sprinkler irrigation equipment.Wadi AI-Abeed Region in Nabul Province: The project includes the construction of an earth fill dam 25 m high and 550 m long, with a width of 6.5 m at the crest and 250 m at the base. The project also includes the construction of irrigation networks for about 900 hectares in the plain of Tekelsa consisting of one pumping station, a water tank, 83 km of pipelines 60-1000 mm in diameter and about 10 km of farm roads.
Wadi Rumail Region in Seliana Province:
Wadi Al-Bark Region in Alkasrain Province: The project includes the construction of an earth fill dam, 35 m high and 300 m long, with a crest width of 8m and a base width of 180 m. The project also includes the rehabilitation of the irrigation network for about 2,060 hectares in Subeiba plain and the construction of a new irrigation network for 450 hectares, the digging of 18 tube wells, the installation of pumping units on these wells and the construction of about 20 km of farm roads. Financing:
The Arab Fund loan constitutes about 69% of the project costs. The beneficiary farmers will finance their procurement of the drip and sprinkler equipment, and the Tunisian government will finance the remaining costs.
