Objectives:
The project aims at improving traffic movement and reducing congestion on the road network of Gaza strip through widening and strengthening the northern part of Salah Eldin road which connects the cities of Beit Hanon, Beit Lahia and Gaza in the north of the Gaza strip with the cities of Khan Younis and Rafah in the southern part of the strip.
Description:
The project is expected to be completed in the year 1998 and comprises the widening and strengthening of the first stage (11.2km) of the 45km Salah Eldin road between Beit Lahia in the north and the Military Police intersection in the south. The project consists of the following components:
1 - Civil Works:
Preparing works, which include mobilization of all offices, laboratory, plant, equipment, supplies, materials and temporary works required for the completion of the project.
Widening and strengthening works, which include repaving and widening the present road for a length of about 11.2 km to become a dual carriage way with 2-5m median. Each of the two directions will have two 3.5m lanes in addition to a 2.5m paved shoulder on each side with footpath and on-street parking. Strengthening works include laying two layers of asphaltic concrete. The top layer is 5 cm thick and the lower layer is 7cm thick. This component also includes replacing or reconstructing all services affected by the project.
Complementary works, including street lighting, traffic signs and signals, road markings, barriers and relocation of electric power lines.

Maintenance:This includes providing the municipalities of Gaza and Jabalia with equipment, spare parts
and training of workers necessary for maintenance works of the road.
3 - Supervision:
Financing:The project provides for consultancy services which are needed for the supervision and coordination between local contractors during implementation since the project is divided into eight parts.
The Arab Fund loan covers 66% of the total project cost. The balance is being covered by the grant offered from the government of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia through the Saudi Fund for Development.
