Raising of Sidi Mohammed Bin Abdullah Dam

and Construction of Boukhamis Dam

Objectives:

The project aims at supplying the coastal area between Rabat and Casablanca with potable water, through regulation of an additional 100 million m3 of water annually in Wadi Aburaqraq and Wadi Krou. The project will increase also the flood protection measures of Rabat and Sala, and improve the life conditions of the population of the most important zone in the Kingdom from economic and social points of view.

Description:

The project, which is expected to be completed by the third quarter of 2005, consists of the following components: 

1- Raising of Sidi Mohamed Bin Abdullah Dam: The existing dam is 87.5 m high and 600 m long with a crest width of 8m. The dam impound a reservoir with a storage capacity of 480 million m3, and regulate about 220 million m3 annually. The project consists of raising the existing dam by about 7.5 m to increase the storage capacity to 1025 million m3, and the regulated volume by about 80 million m3 annually. The dam raising consist of the following works: 

a- Preparatory works: This includes the construction of offices, houses, and laboratory necessary for the construction works of raising the dam. 

b- Civil works: This includes civil works of raising the dam, and the rehabilitation of the existing spillway, the construction of a new bottom outlet and a new water intake for potable water supply. 

c- Electromechanical works: This includes supply and installation of all equipments necessary to control flood water through spillway, bottom outlet and the water intakes  (valves, guard gates and control gates). It also includes all equipment necessary for the monitoring of dam behavior. 

2- Boukhamis Dam: This includes the construction of a roller compacted concrete dam, 65 m high and 250 m long, with a crest width of 7 m. It also includes the construction of a spillway, a bottom outlet and a water intake. The dam will impound a reservoir with a storage capacity of 200 million m3. The construction of the dam includes the following works: 

a- Preparatory works: This includes the construction of offices, houses and a laboratory, an access road of 12 km long, and the diversion of an existing road which is 25 km. It also includes the supply of the site with potable water, electricity and communications.  

b- Civil works: This includes the excavation works, reinforced concrete and roller compacted concrete, grouting, the construction of a spillway and a bottom outlet. It also includes the construction of a water intake to supply nearby villages with potable water, and another intake to divert water into Wadi Krou. 

c- Electromechanical works: This includes all necessary valves and equipments to control water flow in the bottom outlet and water intakes, and the necessary equipments to monitor the operation of the dam and it’s stability. 

3-  Consultancy services: This includes consultancy services for completion of construction design of the two dams, the preparation of tender documents and the supervision of the works. It also includes the services of international experts to review and approve the construction design, and to provide any special needed consultancy services during the construction period. 

4-  Transmission pipeline for potable water: It includes the construction of a new pipeline, which will be undertaken by the National Office of Potable Water to transfer water from the outlet tunnel of Sidi Mohammed Bin Abdullah Dam to the existing pumping station. The pipeline will be 2 km long and 1800mm nominal diameter. 

5- Land expropriation: This includes the expropriation of necessary land for the construction of the two dams and their operation and maintenance. 

6- Project management: This includes the expenses of the project implementation unit which will be responsible for the management and the control of the projects works.

Financing:

The Arab Fund loan covers about 67% of the total cost of the project. The OPEC Fund and the Government of Morocco will finance the remaining cost of the project.
