Objectives:

The project would improve road transport and support the motorway development programme which is designed to accommodate the rapidly growing road traffic and provide for traffic safety on the core road network. The project would also contribute towards development of tourism and other economic and social activities within the project region.

Description:

The project, which is expected to be completed during the 3rd quarter 2005, comprises the construction of around 79 km long motorway stretching between Casablanca and El Jadida with four lanes two 7m-width in each direction, and with 12m island separating the two directions. The project includes the construction of six interchanges, a number of underway and overway crossings and culverts and drainage structure. Works also include the construction of toll collection stations and related systems equipment. The proposed motorway is divided into three sections:

-     Section 1: Starts from Casa and ends at Had Soualem with total length of 16km.

-     Section 2: Starts from Had Soualem and ends at Tnine Chtouka with a total length of 35km.

-     Section 3: Starts from Tnine Chtouka and ends at El Jadida.

 

The project’s main components one:

1-   Road Construction Works:  This includes all civil and structural works relating the road and bridge construction and other civil and ancillary works.

2-   Buildings and Equipment: This includes the construction of six toll stations and the supply end installation of the related equipment and systems. It also includes maintenance stations and supply and installation of traffic safety signs and signals.

3-   Services networks and ancillary works: Two includes relocation and/or extension of various networks that obstruct or pass adjacent to the project corridor including water channels, telephone or electricity lines etc. The ancillary works include plantation for side protection and environments.

4-   Consultancy Services and Project management: This includes consultancy services for completion of project design and preparation of tender documents, and for assisting the company in the control and supervision of the works. Project management includes establishment of a project implementation unit with all required facilities to control the project execution.

Financing:

The Arab Fund  loan covers about 24% of the total cost. The Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development contributed KD 15 million. The European Investment Bank contributed about KD 16.8 million. The remaining project coast will be financed by the Government.
