Description:
The project, which is expected to be completed by the end of the year 2005 represents the first stage of the integrated scheme for the utilization of Bani Haroun water. The scheme started by the construction of Bani Haroun dam, which was completed by mid-2001, and partialy financed by two loans presented by the Arab Fund which amounted to KD 23 million. The main components of the project include:
1. Pumping Station: This includes the construction of 85 m high reinforced concrete tower with an outside diameter of 30 m, the installation of two pumps with a rated power of 90 MW to pump 23 m3/second .The construction of the pumping station includes the following major works:
a) Preparatory and Civil Works: This includes the construction of the reinforced concrete tower, with 200 m steel bridge from the bank of the reservoir to the tower, and the service building and all civil works for the pumping station.
b) Electro-Mechanical Works: This includes the supply and the installation of two centrifugal pumps, each capable of pumping 11.5 m3/second at a rated head of 700 m. The pumps are driven by electric motor with a rated power of 90MW. The works also include the supply of all electrical and mechanical equipment and devices necessary for the operation of the pumps.
c) Transmission Line and Substation: This includes the construction of 220 kV, 35 km long transmission line, and a 10 km-long 60kV emergency line, two 220/13.8 kV transformers and one 60/6.6 kV transformer.
d) Technical Services: This includes the consultancy services for the review and preparation of the detailed design, and supervision of the works for the pumping station, and the studies required for the other components of the project.
e) Land Expropriation and Compensation: This includes the land acquisition and compensation for properties necessary for the construction of the pumping station.
2. Conveyor from Pumping Station to Othmania Dam: This includes 18 km of pipeline and tunnels for the conveyance of water from the pumping station to Othmania Dam.
3. Othamania Dam: This includes the construction of 35 m high dam, with gross storage capacity of 35 million m3.
4. Pipeline, Pumping and Water Treatment Plants: This includes the pipeline, pumping stations and water treatment plants for the supply of municipal water to the cities and villages of Welyats Constantina and Mila.
Financing:
The Arab Fund loan covers about 70% of the total cost of the pumping station. The Government of Algeria is seeking financing for the other components of the first stage from prospective financing agencies, and will fund the remainder of the project cost.
