The project aims at creating new job opportunities for qualified people, professionals and university graduates who lack financial resources and/or required bank guaranties, by providing loans through the Banque Tunisienne de Solidarite’ (BTS) to help them start gainful micro-projects in various sectors of the economy. It also aims at increasing production in Tunisia, improving the balance of trade by substituting local production to imports and increasing exports, and at increasing the BTS' resources.
Description:
The project, which is expected to be completed by mid-2004, consists of providing loans through the Banque Tunisienne de Solidarite’ as a contribution to the financing of small productive investment projects in various sectors of the economy. The project will also provide assistance to the BTS and to the activities in relation with the bank as well as to the projects it finances. The project has two main components:
1. Small development loans: this component consists of providing sub-loans to finance the acquisition of equipment, machinery, means of transportation and communication, spare parts and technical services necessary to create new small productive investment projects, or to develop existing projects.
2. Institutional support: this component covers the studies, the consultancy services, the systems and organizational development, office equipment, means of transportation and communication and the training and institutional development required to improve the performance of BTS and related activities.
Financing:
The Arab Fund loan covers 15% of the total project cost. The contribution of the beneficiaries will amount to KD 5.9 million (8%), that of BTS will amount to KD 38.1 million (52%) and that of the Tunisian Government will amount to KD18.0 million (25%).
