The project would upgrade and enhance air transport services, and meet the increasing demand of air transport of passengers and cargo through Sana’a International Airport, which is the main airport for international and domestic flights in the Republic of Yemen. The project’s particular contribution is to the development and upgrading of tourism, which constitutes one of the most important sectors in the economic development of the country.
Description:
The project, which is expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2006, consists of upgrading the current airport through the construction of a new passenger terminal equipped with mobile bridges for embarkation and disembarkation of passengers. The terminal will be furnished and equipped with modern equipment to meet the requirements for passenger and air cargo services, including the replacement and renovation of other various equipment and fixtures. The project also includes the strengthening and extension of the runway, taxiways and apron. Furthermore, consultancy services will be provided to complete the study and to supervise the project implementation, in addition to institutional support to the Authority.
The components of the project may be summarized as follows:-
1- Construction of passenger terminal and its annexes: This covers all construction work pertaining to the passenger terminal building, consisting of approximately 28,000 m2, and includes equipment and furniture for the arrival and departure halls to accommodate passengers and cargo transportation. The equipment and fixtures will include five mobile bridges. Civil works include pavement of aircraft parking areas in front of the main building, car parking lots outside the building, and feeder roads that connect to the main roads leading into the city.
2- Upgrading runway, taxiways and apron: This includes strengthening of the runway, taxiways and apron. It also includes all works relating to the extension and various complementary works relating to signalisation and ground markings, and the rehabilitation of the lighting network, water drainage and the replacement and shifting of the navigational aid equipment.
3- Fixtures and equipment: This includes upgrading various necessary fixtures and equipment to raise the standard of the airport operations, and to ensure proper safety and security measures. It covers upgrading navigational aid equipment, approach radars and wire/wireless communication systems, procurement and installation of electrical generators, transformers and rehabilitation of the electrical grid network. It also the construction of an airport maintenance unit and workshop, and supplying the fire station with fire engines.
4- Training and institutional support: This includes the construction of the Civil Aviation Training Institute, and modernizing its training facilities, as well as providing institutional support to the Authority to assist in planning and implementing its training programs, and developing its management systems.
5- Consulting services: This includes preparation of development plans for the airport, completing the designs, specifications and contract documents for the project, and assisting the Authority to prequalify contractors, evaluate tenders, and supervision of the project implementation.
Financing:
The Arab Fund loan covers approximately 73% of the total project cost. The Yemeni Government will finance the remaining costs of the project.
