The project aims at expanding the electrical network used to transmit power from Manantali Dam to Mauritania in order to cover the area lying on the right bank of the Senegal River. The project will secure an economic source of power for the area, replacing the high-running cost diesel units, and will contribute to the efforts of the Mauritanian Government in providing electrical power necessary to reclaim about 90 thousand hectares in the project area.
Description:
The project, which is expected to be completed by the second quarter of 2003, consists of the following components:
1. Transmission line: This includes the construction of a single-circuit, 100km long, transmission line connecting Kaedi to Boghe, and having an exchange capacity of 24MW.
2. Substations: This includes the expansion of the 90kV Kaedi substation and the construction of a new 90kV substation at Boghe to include two 10 MVA transformers, of which one will be used to feed the town of Boghe and the other to be used as a spare. This component also includes the supply and installation of 15 kV switchgear.
3. Supervisory services: This includes services to supervise the construction of the lines and substations, the participation in factory witness testing, along with the purchase of transportation equipment.
4. Interconnection network: This includes the supply and installation of the overhead lines, cables, switchgear, and protection and control equipment necessary to reinforce the system and connect the substations at Kaedi, Boghe and Rosso with the corresponding 15kV SONELEC power generating stations in these three towns.
5. Technical services and supervision: This includes conducting studies and completing necessary designs to interconnect the Kaedi, Boghe and Rosso substations with the corresponding SONELEC power generating stations.
6. Training: This includes the training of SONELEC technical staff.
Financing:
The Arab Fund loan covers about 95% of the total project cost. The Mauritanian Government will finance the remaining costs.
