Objectives:

The project aims at improving the road transport services and upgrading the main road network to motorways that would accommodate the increasing traffic and alleviate traffic congestion on the main links of the network.

Description:

The project comprises the construction of a 41 km long motorway that would link the capital Tunis with the city of Binzerte. At the entrance of Binzerte, and as an extension to the motorway, the project also includes strengthening and widening works. The motorway consists of a 15m carriageway with four-lane asphalt road, two lanes in each direction separated by a 12m median and a 3m shoulder on each side. Construction elements include interchanges, bridges and flyovers for full control toll access and grade-separated intersections. The project consists of the following main components:

  1. Civil Works: This includes all earthwork, pavement layers, bridge construction and other structures, construction of the toll station, and all other ancillary works.

  2. Consultancy Services: This includes employing consultancy firms to complete the studies and detailed design of the project, and to assist the management in the control and supervision of the project implementation.

  3. Project Implementation Management: This includes the establishment of a project implementation unit and the provision of the necessary equipment, instruments and facilities to enable control and supervision of the execution of the project.

  4. Equipment: This includes the supply and installation of the toll system equipment and computer related facilities.

Financing:

The Arab Fund loan covers about 51% of the total project cost. The remaining costs will be financed by the Tunisian Government and the "Tunisian Highways Company".
