Objectives:

The project aims at increasing the agricultural production in the provinces of Assaba, Taajent and Brakna, which are adjacent to Achram. This will be accomplished through the rehabilitation and construction of about 33 small sandy dams. The inundated area will be used for agricultural purposes. The project contributes to the settling of the 109,000 inhabitants of the area through the promotion of self -sufficiency, the increase in farmers' revenues and the provision of drinking water. The project also plays a part in limiting erosion, desertification and the progression of dunes.

Description:

The project includes the rehabilitation and construction of 33 small sandy dams which will be exploited to develop agriculture in over 2,300 hectares of Sorghum and Niebe, and the digging of 30 exploratory wells, 15 of which will be exploited to provide the necessary quantity of water for the dam project and will subsequently be re-used for drinking water. The project also includes consulting services to provide detailed technical studies and to assist in the preparation of tender documents and follow-up, along with support for the executing agency by providing equipment and supplying the vehicles needed for the implementation of the project. It also provides services needed for the training of local farmers who will be in charge of operating and maintaining the different components of the project. The project consists of the following major components:

  1. Rehabilitation and Construction of Dams: This includes the rehabilitation of two small dams, reconstruction of about 17 dams that eroded as a result of floodwaters and the construction of about 14 small sandy dams. It also includes the preparation of roads, with a total length of 1 km, leading to 4 dams, in addition to necessary tree plantation in order to protect the dams from erosion and to stabilize the dunes.

  2. Digging the Wells and Providing the Equipment: This includes the digging of 30 exploratory wells, with the intention of converting 15 of them into production wells in order to supply the water necessary for building the dams. These wells will later be equipped with manual and solar-driven pumps to raise the water to elevated tanks connected to public faucets, with the intention of using this water for drinking purposes. This component of the project also includes the formation of a model-farming unit to encourage farmers to diversify production and use modern technology.

  3. Consultancy Services: This includes hydrological and geophysical studies to determine the appropriate location for the wells and their design. It also includes the preparation of tender documents and the services of experts who will help in the management of the project.

  4. Institutional Support: This includes assisting the executing agency, providing equipment, vehicles and all required training to the farmers who will be in charge of operating and maintaining the equipment.

  5. Extension Services: The project includes all required extension services to farmers for seeds selection, fertilization, agricultural technology and training for operating and maintaining the facilities.

Financing:

The Arab Fund loan constitutes about 83% of the total project cost. The Mauritanian Government will finance the remaining costs.
