Objectives:

The project aims at mobilizing and regulating the Wadi Mujib water resources, utilizing this water for potash and chemical industries on the Dead Sea, for tourism development on the Dead Sea shore and for irrigation. The project will increase agricultural production, provide employment opportunities and generate income from industry and tourism.

Description:

The project, which is expected to be completed by the end of the year 2002, consists of the following main components:

  1. First Phase 

    1. Tannur Dam: This dam will be built of roller-compacted concrete (RCC) on Wadi Rasa. The dam will be 69 m high, 240 m long and 12 m wide at the crest. It will include water control and appurtenant structures.

    2. Wala Dam: This dam will be built of RCC on Wadi Wala. It will be 45 m high, 300 m long and 9 m wide at the crest. The dam will include water control and appurtenant structures. It will also include drilling of 8 injection wells and necessary pipes and equipment to inject the water of the dam into the groundwater aquifier.

    3. Water Diversion and Conveyance Installation: 

      1. Water Diversion Dam: Construction of a reinforced concrete dam on Wadi Mujib downstream of its confluence with Wadi Wala. The dam will be 5.7 m high and 20 m long. It will include a water intake with a capacity of 3m3/ second and two distilling basins.

      2. Water Conveyors: These include drilling and lining of a 1,300 meter-long tunnel with a diameter of 2.3 m, construction of the 28 km long North conveyor to supply the touristic area, and the 75 km long South conveyor to supply the various zones of irrigated land and the Arab Potash company.

      3. Pumping Stations: Construction of three pumping stations in Haditha, Sammar and Fifa, installation of 13 pumps with a capacity varying between 40 liters/second and 225 liters/second, and installation of three transformers.

    4. Irrigation, Drainage and Roads Networks: 

      1. Land Preparation: Clearing and leveling of 1186 ha of irrigable land.

      2. Irrigation Network: Construction of an irrigation network of about 35 km of

      3. ductile iron pipes, 50 km of PVC pipes, 300 water intakes equipped with water- meters and pressure regulating valves. It also includes procurement of on-farm irrigation equipment.

      4. Drainage System: Construction of 100 km of surface drains to remove excess water and laying of 120 km of perforated PVC pipes for the subsurface drainage.

      5. Roads: Construction of 80 km of 6 meter- wide paved rural roads.

      6. Flood Protection: Construction of 15 km of gabion bund walls to protect irrigated lands and irrigation networks.

    5. Consulting Services: Provision of the necessary consulting services to review and complete the detailed and final designs and to perform the required project implementation supervision.

    6. Project Management: Establishment of a project management unit, recruitment of technical and administrative staff, procurement of the necessary cars, materials and equipment.

  2. Second Phase- Mujib Dam (The Proposed Project) 

This dam will be built of RCC on Wadi Mujib. It will be 62 m high, 660 m long and 12 m wide at the crest. The dam will include water control structures equipped with gates and valves.

Financing:

The Arab Fund loan constitutes 44% of the proposed project cost (Mujib Dam) and the Jordanian Government will finance the remaining cost.
