Objectives: 

The project aims at improving the traffic flow at the southern entrances of the city of Beirut and reducing traffic congestion within the city. It would contribute towards the development of the airport traffic flow.

Description:

The project is composed of four main parts:

  1. Awzaee Road: This component would include either an elevated or a leveled motorway. The elevated motorway would have a total length of about 3.25 km extending between the northern end of the existing Awzaee road and the southern section linking with South Motorway. The leveled Awzaee road is about 2.6 km with six lanes, three in each direction. This also includes service roads and three interchanges.

  2. Khaldeh-Cocodi Road: This component comprises the construction of a motorway about 5 km long with four lanes within the Beirut airport zone. The road connecting the South motorway and the Khaldeh -Cocodi road includes two tunnels of lengths 760 m and 460 m.

  3. Cocodi Interchange: This comprises a three-level interchange connecting the existing and new road network with the airport area. It includes a roundabout under the bridge to distribute the traffic in three directions, and a 700 m road link with four lanes in each direction linking the airport with the northern entrance of Beirut.

  4. The project components include:

  1. Civil works: This includes all civil works relating to the construction of the three main elements described above, including supply and installation of lighting, ventilation and firefighting equipments, and all related ancillary works and networks of services.

  2. Consultancy Services: This includes services required for preparation of design and tender documents, and supervision of the project implementation.

Financing:

The Arab Fund loan comprises 36.6% of the project total cost. The Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development will contribute KD 12 million towards the project cost. The balance will be covered by the Lebanese Government. The Arab Fund loan comprises 36.6% of the project total cost.
